Carpe Diem: 2018.05.28 Memorial Day

by James A. Clapp

It’s Memorial Day again,

and flags defurl and flutter

in irenic spring breezes,

John Wayne war movies flicker

past military glories

fought on Hollywood’s back lots

It’s Memorial Day again,

parades clamor the streets of commerce;

(what this is all about anyway).

Not so much the Elysisan fields

that quietly add dying flowers to dead souls,

a few blocks away.

It’s Memorial Day again, and

ironically,

there is as more forgotten,

in the blather of the pols of deferment,

boasting of exploits of military might,

and foretelling those of dead heroes yet to come,

when it is Memorial Day yet again.

…. and this year Shelly lies next to his brother with a flag at their headstones. The day has always been special, but this year with more emotional meaning. There were always “other” special men and women ….. this year it is mine. If you would like to view Shelly’s headstone: arlingtoncemetery.mil go to Find a Grave, then click on the picture on the right (the cemetery), then Find a Grave and type in Shelly’s name. Hope all is well with you and family. Love…..
